VENEZUELAN FOLKTALES
leyendas (legends)
  • Spanish: leyenda

Most Venezuelan tales celebrate astucia or viveza (CLEVERNESS).
They may feature:
  • a dislike for pure power
  • the belief that wealth or other advantages come from good luck
  • that equality is more important than liberty
  • the purpose of justice is not to fix the wrong...but to punish the powerful.
* Religion is often expressed in folk stories, expressing wisdom and tradition.
Some tales don't feature humans, instead they may have animals.
The tales are a source for a rich and varied theatrical tradition. The teller acted out the sayings and the plot.

LITTLE DOG, PANTHER, AND MONKEY

A COLORFUL TOUCAN SITS IN A TREE

Sometimes a story was made to teach children, in an interesting theatrical method, why animals look or act a certain way.
