BAHAMAS FOOD

• Bahamian Cuisine often includes fish, shellfish, lobster, crab, and other seafood.
        –Staple = Conch (Konk), used
          in salad, to make fritters, soup, &
          stew.

• Common meats are goat (mutton), chicken, and iguana (though some species are protected).

• Other widely incorporated foods include: tropical fruits, rice, peas, pigeon peas, potatoes, and pork.
• Some common seasonings used in dishes include chilies, lime, cilantro, tomatoes, onions, garlic, allspice, cinnamon, and even coconut.

MEALS:

Expect some fresh fruit, like this papaya, for breakfast!
You may also see eggs with seafood, and some similar breakfast items to the US.

For lunch & dinner, you can certainly expect very fresh seafood, or dishes like the Chicken Stew to the left!

If you're in the Bahamas, you really must try
Conch (konk) Salad!!!




SWEETS:

•Bahamians are especially fond of fruits, and they make inventive dishes out of them, including soursop ice cream and sapodilla pudding.
•The islanders also grow and enjoy melons, pineapples, passion fruit, mangoes and papaya.
•Guava Duff – a Bahamian cuisine desert dish made with fruit in dough.
–Fruit is folded into dough and boiled, then served with sauce.
–Ingredients include fruit (especially guava), butter, sugar, eggs, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, flour, pepper, and baking powder. 
–This is often made during the Bahamian Independence Day celebration!
